The Tesla Model X Suv has undeniably made a significant impact on the automotive landscape, especially in the luxury electric SUV market. After spending considerable time experiencing the Model X firsthand, it’s clear why this vehicle generates so much buzz. From initial impressions to detailed feature analysis, this review delves into the aspects that make the Tesla Model X SUV stand out.
Our journey with the Model X began during a tour in Southern California, where these electric SUVs were surprisingly ubiquitous. This experience moved from merely observing them in parking lots to truly understanding their appeal. Our first in-depth encounter was at an event hosted by Unplugged Performance, where we explored a Model X owned by Teslarati Founder Gene Liu. This initial interaction allowed us to examine the frunk space, appreciate the aesthetics of the white interior, and even test the third-row seating. While the third-row seats are typical of SUVs – somewhat compact, they are adequately functional for adults on shorter trips. It’s a common SUV trait that third-row seating prioritizes occasional use over expansive comfort, a compromise many vehicle designs make for the sake of overall vehicle size and utility.

Further enriching our experience, we had the opportunity to thoroughly examine another Model X brought by reader Don Baumhefner and his son Max. This extended interaction provided a deeper understanding of the vehicle’s features and driving dynamics, complementing initial impressions and allowing for a more holistic review of the Tesla Model X SUV.
The Luxurious Ride Experience of the Model X
One of the first and most striking impressions of the Model X, particularly noticeable after driving the Model S, is its exceptionally smooth suspension. While my personal Model S has a spring suspension, and I’ve also driven an air-suspension loaner, both exhibited a sporty, firm road feel characteristic of luxury sports cars. The Model S maintains a noticeable connection with the road, especially during cornering and at highway speeds, offering a driver-centric, engaged experience.
In contrast, the Tesla Model X SUV offers a uniquely luxurious suspension system that sets it apart. Traditional SUVs often feature softer suspensions, but they can feel top-heavy, with noticeable body roll in corners and a tendency to bounce over larger road imperfections. The Model X counters this with its battery pack, which acts as a low-center-of-gravity counterweight. This innovative design places the majority of the vehicle’s weight at its base, fundamentally altering its handling and ride quality. It’s as if Tesla integrated the spirited essence of a sports car with the increased cabin space of an SUV, maintaining suspension sophistication even with a higher ride height.

This distinctive ride quality became a central theme in my experience with the Model X, influencing the entire in-car ambiance. While driving the Model S evokes a sense of eagerness and readiness, with its inherent power always at the ready, the Model X promotes a more relaxed and serene environment. The suspension of the Model X communicates a sense of calm and comfort, ideal for cruising and long journeys. This difference in suspension tuning significantly impacts the driving experience, with the Model X favoring a more comfortable, laid-back feel compared to the Model S’s more energetic character.
Elevated Seating and Visibility in the Tesla SUV
Beyond the cloud-like ride, the elevated seating position in the Model X is another significant advantage. It provides enhanced visibility without feeling excessively high or disconnected from the road. This higher vantage point offers a better view of the surroundings, a common benefit of SUVs, while still maintaining a sense of connection with the driving environment. Many SUVs suffer from poor visibility, but the Model X strikes a good balance, offering a commanding view without sacrificing awareness of nearby vehicles and road conditions.
The Unique Choreography of Model X Rear Seats
While perhaps a minor detail compared to performance or range, the automated movement of the Model X’s middle seats is a noteworthy feature, somewhat akin to the falcon-wing doors in terms of novelty. At the touch of a button, these seats adjust in various ways to optimize access and utility. For third-row entry, the middle seats intelligently angle and slide forward, creating a more generous passage. Similarly, when folding the third-row seats down for increased cargo space, the middle seats automatically adjust forward to ensure the rear headrests clear them, simplifying the process.
However, this reliance on motorized mechanisms throughout the Model X, including the falcon-wing doors, rear liftgate, and even front doors, does raise questions about long-term durability. The front doors, which open via a button-activated mechanism, are a futuristic touch, but the overall prevalence of electronic actuators prompts consideration of reliability. While mechanical components tend to degrade gradually and are often easier to repair, electronic systems can fail abruptly. Whether this technological approach translates into long-term satisfaction or potential maintenance concerns is a factor for prospective owners to consider.

Roomy Rear Entry and Falcon-Wing Doors
The falcon-wing doors of the Tesla Model X are arguably its most polarizing design feature. They evoke a strong “wow” factor and are undeniably attention-grabbing. While they may be perceived as overly ostentatious for some, their functional benefits are considerable, especially for families. For parents navigating tight parking spaces or garages with children, these doors offer exceptional access to both the second and third rows. The expansive opening they create simplifies child seat installation and passenger entry/exit in confined areas where traditional doors would be restrictive.
Tesla Autopilot Capabilities
Tesla’s Autopilot system, a semi-autonomous driving feature, is a significant highlight of the Model X, consistent with other current Tesla vehicles. While opinions on its current iteration may vary, its potential for enhancing long-distance travel is undeniable. Imagine embarking on a road trip and engaging Autopilot, transforming driving time into productive or relaxing time. The ability to read, work, or simply unwind while the car manages driving tasks significantly reduces driver fatigue on long journeys.
However, the current Autopilot hardware is not designed for full autonomy in the future. This reality means that achieving complete self-driving capability will likely require a future vehicle upgrade. While Autopilot offers substantial benefits and is a valuable feature, its current limitations should be considered in the context of long-term autonomous driving expectations. The technology is continually evolving, and future iterations promise even greater capabilities.

Uncompromising Safety Features of the Tesla Model X
Safety is a core pillar of the Tesla brand, evident in their vehicle design and company messaging. Tesla’s emphasis on safety, often highlighted immediately after environmental concerns in their presentations, underscores its importance. This commitment to safety is not merely a selling point; it reflects a genuine prioritization of occupant protection and accident prevention.
In a market where vehicle safety is paramount, Tesla’s dedication sets a high standard. Considering the significant number of traffic fatalities annually, choosing a vehicle engineered for superior safety is a rational decision. If comparing vehicles with similar features, like a hypothetical scenario between a Tesla Model 3 and another electric vehicle where safety ratings differ significantly, the Tesla’s superior safety record becomes a decisive factor for many buyers. Tesla’s proactive approach to safety elevates industry standards and provides consumers with vehicles designed with robust protective measures.
Overall Assessment of the Tesla Model X SUV
The Tesla Model X SUV stands out as a premier SUV in today’s market, offering a compelling blend of performance, luxury, and technology. Beyond the aspects already discussed, its instant torque provides exhilarating acceleration, while the panoramic windshield enhances the driving experience with expansive views. Features like Tesla’s Supercharging network, zero-emission operation, the quietness of electric driving, regenerative braking, comfortable seating, a large touchscreen interface, excellent customer service, a streamlined purchasing process, and long-term fuel savings further contribute to its appeal. Tesla’s continuous innovation permeates every aspect of the Model X, making it a leader in the electric vehicle segment.
While the Model X shares many similarities with the Model S, perhaps not warranting an immediate upgrade for current Model S owners, it presents a strong and attractive option for those considering a new vehicle, especially within the SUV category. Its unique combination of SUV practicality and Tesla’s signature electric performance and technology makes the Model X a compelling choice.
