SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (August 1, 2023) – The legend is back. After a three-year hiatus, the Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota’s longest-running nameplate and a symbol of off-road prowess, makes its triumphant return to the North American market for the 2024 model year. This revival marks a return to the Land Cruiser’s rugged roots, echoing the spirit of its legendary predecessors. From the iconic two-door 40 Series, celebrated for its fold-down windshield and adventurous spirit, to the luxurious yet capable 200 Series, the last generation sold in the US, the Land Cruiser has consistently blended robust strength with evolving features. Now, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser re-emerges, embodying its heritage as a high-quality, durable off-roader, but with a more accessible price point, opening up backcountry adventures to a broader audience worldwide.
Built upon the robust TNGA-F global truck platform, the new Toyota Land Cruiser is engineered to conquer the most challenging terrains. For this generation, it exclusively features the powerful i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, delivering 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Slightly more compact than the outgoing 200 Series, the 2024 Land Cruiser promises enhanced agility on trails, incorporating cutting-edge off-road technology first seen in the latest Toyota truck lineup. In a nod to its exclusivity at launch, a First Edition grade, limited to just 5,000 units for North America during the initial two months of production, will boast unique features including round heritage LED headlamps, a roof rack, rock rails, and a distinctive interior design.
“This icon truly belongs in our lineup,” stated Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager. “For 2024, the Land Cruiser returns to its origin, showcasing a heritage-inspired design while maintaining the legendary capability and durability it’s renowned for. It’s poised to take even more adventurers across the globe, continuing a legacy built over generations.”
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will be manufactured at Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara and Hino plants in Japan and is scheduled to arrive in the U.S. in the spring of 2024. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is anticipated to start in the mid-$50,000 range, with the official announcement closer to the on-sale date.
Returning to the Land Cruiser’s Core: Heritage and Capability
For decades, the Toyota Land Cruiser has been synonymous with world-class off-road capability and Toyota’s core values of quality, durability, and reliability. Its journey in the U.S. began in the late 1950s, with initial sales being modest. However, the arrival of the 40 Series marked a turning point, establishing the Land Cruiser as Toyota’s best-selling model in the U.S. for five consecutive years. These early models, characterized by solid front and rear axles on leaf springs, a boxy silhouette, flat roof, short overhangs, and the distinct “TOYOTA” grille, became instantly iconic. As customer needs evolved, the Land Cruiser expanded into larger station wagon models like the 55 and 60 Series, ultimately culminating in the 200 Series in the U.S. – a premium, full-size luxury SUV that still retained its off-road DNA.
Now, after a three-year absence from the U.S. market, the Land Cruiser leverages the global TNGA-F body-on-frame platform for its revival. This updated ladder frame construction provides increased chassis rigidity compared to the 200 Series, thanks to the incorporation of high-strength steel and advanced welding techniques. Significantly, the new Land Cruiser is 4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter than its predecessor, the 200 Series, enhancing its off-road maneuverability and agility on challenging terrains.
The design direction for the new Land Cruiser was a collaborative effort between Toyota’s North American-based studio CALTY Design Research and the global development team. The design philosophy centered around four key principles: authenticity, reliability, timelessness, and professionalism. The resulting all-new Land Cruiser embodies a pure and functional form, where design directly reflects capability.
For the quintessential Land Cruiser aesthetic, the 1958 grade proudly features the iconic round LED headlights and the heritage “TOYOTA” grille. In contrast, the higher Land Cruiser grades adopt slim, rectangular headlights reminiscent of the FJ62, offering a different, yet equally classic look. The squared body profile evokes the Land Cruisers of previous generations, while the A-pillar is strategically pushed back, enhancing both the visual appeal and forward visibility on trails. The reduced front overhang further contributes to improved approach angles for tackling steep obstacles.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser features a newly developed double-wishbone front suspension with twin-tube shocks, paired with a multi-link rear suspension with coil springs. Electric power steering is introduced to enhance steering feel and accommodate advanced safety and convenience features. All models are equipped with 17-inch disc brakes on both front and rear wheels. With a standard trailer hitch across all grades, the Land Cruiser boasts a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds, adding to its versatility.
i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Powertrain: Power and Efficiency
The 2024 Land Cruiser comes standard across all grades with the advanced i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. This system combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-hp electric motor seamlessly integrated into an eight-speed transmission. Power is drawn from a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, resulting in a combined system output of 326 horsepower and an impressive 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel economy estimates are anticipated to be announced closer to the Land Cruiser’s official on-sale date.
Every Land Cruiser is equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system, featuring a center locking differential and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range. The system also incorporates Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and an Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD). For enhanced traction in challenging conditions, an electronic locking rear differential is standard on all Land Cruiser models, capable of distributing power 50/50 to the rear wheels.
An Off-Road Icon Reborn: Trail-Ready Features
The Land Cruiser’s legacy as an off-road icon continues with this new generation, packed with features to tackle any terrain. An all-new front stabilizer bar disconnect system comes standard on the Land Cruiser and First Edition grades, providing increased wheel articulation at the touch of a button. The Land Cruiser boasts an approach angle of up to 31.0 degrees, a maximum departure angle of 22.0 degrees, and a breakover angle of 25.0 degrees. Ground clearance reaches up to 8.7 inches. For robust off-road protection, customers can opt for rock rails and full-coverage high-strength steel skid plates. Front tow/recovery hooks are standard for off-road recovery situations. The Land Cruiser 1958 grade includes standard fog lamps to enhance visibility, while the Land Cruiser grade upgrades to color-selectable RIGID fog lamps for even greater customization.
Multi-Terrain Select, now operational in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low modes, is standard on the Land Cruiser grade. This system offers adjustable settings to optimize wheel spin control across various terrains like Mud, Dirt, and Sand. CRAWL Control, also standard, functions as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, allowing the driver to focus on steering while the system manages speed across five selectable settings. Downhill Assist Control is another standard off-road feature, aiding drivers in navigating steep descents by automatically limiting vehicle speed. To further enhance off-road awareness, the Multi-Terrain Monitor provides real-time views of potential obstacles, displayed on the available 12.3-inch touchscreen, standard on the Land Cruiser grade.
With Toyota Genuine Accessories and Associated Accessory Products (AAP), the Land Cruiser offers extensive customization potential. The AAP ecosystem, continuously expanding, currently features over 100 accessories, including off-road recovery gear, rack attachment brackets for storage, and carriers for outdoor sporting equipment. These accessories can be conveniently financed along with the vehicle, making customization easier than ever through Toyota.

The 2024 Land Cruiser offers seating for up to five passengers. The Land Cruiser grade upgrades to heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, available in black or Java, along with a larger 12.3-inch multimedia monitor and an optional 14-speaker JBL premium sound system. The Land Cruiser grade also offers available 4G connectivity for up to five devices, transforming the vehicle into an AT&T Hotspot. The limited First Edition grade exclusively features leather-trimmed seats with a unique “First Edition” logo embossed on the door panels. A standard Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output and dual USB-C charging ports in the front row, with rear passenger ports available, ensure devices stay powered. Functional interior enhancements for off-road driving include a palm rest for touchscreen operation and side knee pads for added support.
A Smart Key System with push-button start is standard across all grades. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, an available Digital Key allows compatible smartphones to enable vehicle entry, tailgate access, and engine start (dependent on 4G network availability). This Digital Key can also be remotely shared, providing greater control over vehicle access without needing to physically hand over a key.

The 2024 Land Cruiser will be available in a streamlined three-grade structure: the Land Cruiser 1958, the Land Cruiser, and the limited-run Land Cruiser First Edition. An available premium package for the Land Cruiser grade adds features such as power heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats with lumbar support, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, head-up display, digital rearview mirror, and a moonroof.
The 2024 Land Cruiser offers a palette of seven exterior color options: Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Underground, Black, Meteor Shower, Trail Dust, and Heritage Blue. The two-tone Trail Dust and Heritage Blue options are paired with a contrasting Grayscape roof, adding a distinctive visual touch.
