LAS VEGAS (Nov. 5, 2024) – Toyota has once again showcased its innovative spirit with the Toyota Rav-X concept, a radical reimagining of the small crossover, specifically designed for off-road enthusiasts. Unveiled at the 2024 SEMA Show, this concept pushes the boundaries of what a Toyota RAV4 can be.
The RAV-X project is the brainchild of Toyota Service Parts and Accessories Development (SPAD), a team dedicated to creating performance upgrades and accessories. For SEMA 2024, the SPAD engineers undertook the ambitious task of bringing the RAV-X from a mere concept to a tangible reality. Their work spanned from initial design sketches and CAD models to 3D-printed components and the final assembly of the vehicle.
This concept is heavily inspired by the Dakar Rally, renowned for its extreme desert racing conditions. The Dakar Rally is a grueling test of vehicle toughness and engineering excellence in the face of harsh environments. The SPAD team’s objective was to create a vehicle that embodies agile off-road capabilities combined with high-speed performance, moving beyond the standard Toyota RAV4 capabilities.
“The RAV-X concept was envisioned as a halo model for the Toyota RAV4 lineup,” explained Jakin Wilson, senior engineering manager at Toyota Service Parts and Accessories. “Leveraging our team’s extensive experience in developing high-performance off-road vehicles, we engineered a concept that truly resonates with the off-road enthusiast.”
Building upon the everyday practicality of the standard Toyota RAV4, the RAV-X is engineered for superior off-road performance. The foundation for this build was a 2024 Toyota RAV4 PHEV, selected for its robust 302 net combined horsepower output. This power, enhanced with a ram air intake, and the vehicle’s low center of gravity, thanks to battery placement, made it an ideal starting point for an off-road performance build.
The SPAD engineers focused significantly on the chassis, developing a long-travel suspension system with custom-designed components. This upgrade increased the vehicle’s ride height by 2 inches (51 mm) and widened the track by 6.3 inches (160 mm). The vehicle features custom, fully adjustable, 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks at both front and rear. These shocks incorporate Dual Speed Compression adjustment, enabling precise tuning for varied terrains, improving handling and control. To manage shock oil temperatures during intense off-road driving, front external reservoirs and rear piggyback reservoirs were incorporated. Ensuring durability for high-speed desert terrain, the engineers developed forged aluminum front lower control arms and forged aluminum rear upper supports.
High-clearance front and rear skid plates provide essential undercarriage protection, while raised rocker panels further enhance ground clearance. A Dakar-inspired front bumper, complete with integrated cooling ducts, and custom fender flares with front-wheel ventilation are designed to optimize airflow. The RAV-X is fitted with 17×8.5-inch forged aluminum wheels and 265/65R17 tires at each corner. These elements collectively enhance approach and departure angles, resulting in a vehicle engineered for exceptional off-road dynamics, pushing the performance limits of a small crossover Toyota RAV4.
The aerodynamic styling of the Toyota RAV-X includes a prominent rear spoiler and strategic front fascia venting, designed to reduce pressure in the engine bay and front wheel wells. A high-clearance dual exhaust system, integrated into the rear bumper, further refines the vehicle’s overall design.
“The Toyota RAV-X concept is more than just a show vehicle; it represents a bold statement about the potential of blending innovation and performance,” stated Mike Tripp, group vice president of Toyota Division Marketing, Toyota Motor North America. “The Toyota RAV4 is one of our most versatile and popular models. With RAV-X, we are illustrating the exciting possibilities for adventure and style within the small crossover segment.”
The RAV-X concept underscores Toyota’s dedication to advancing automotive engineering and design, particularly within the Toyota RAV4 family. The RAV-X was showcased at the 2024 SEMA Show from November 5-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, in the Toyota booth (Central Hall, Booth 22200). Industry professionals and Toyota enthusiasts were invited to explore the RAV-X firsthand and witness the future potential of small crossover vehicles like the Toyota RAV4.
It is important to note that the vehicle referenced is a special project prototype, modified with parts and accessories not currently available from Toyota. These modifications may affect the vehicle’s warranty, safety, and on-road legality.
