Toyota Sequoia Production Line Starts in Texas: Highlighting the All-New Hybrid SUV

SAN ANTONIO, TX (Sept. 21, 2022) – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas (TMMTX) has officially announced the commencement of production for the highly anticipated all-new Toyota Sequoia. This third-generation model marks a significant step into the era of electrified vehicles, being exclusively produced as an all-hybrid SUV. Built in San Antonio by Texan hands, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia combines robust power with enhanced fuel efficiency, thanks to its state-of-the-art twin-turbo V6 hybrid i-FORCE Max powertrain.

Kevin Voelkel, president of Toyota Texas, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “The third-generation Sequoia represents a new chapter in Toyota’s commitment to carbon neutrality. It not only meets but exceeds customer expectations for this iconic SUV by delivering exceptional performance while minimizing environmental impact. Our team in Texas is incredibly proud to add the Sequoia to our production lineup, embracing the challenge of building vehicles that resonate with our customers’ lifestyles.”

Toyota Sequoia Finds Its New Home in Texas

A substantial $391 million investment in Toyota Texas back in 2019 laid the groundwork for TMMTX to become the exclusive manufacturing hub for both the all-new Toyota Tundra and the Toyota Sequoia. The launch of the 2023 Sequoia introduces advanced manufacturing techniques to the San Antonio plant. Over 3,800 Toyota employees and 5,300 on-site suppliers have dedicated countless hours to prepare for this moment. The production line now features cutting-edge laser welding technology and an evolved process capable of handling the largest sheet of metal ever used by Toyota, showcasing the scale and innovation involved in bringing the new Sequoia to life.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is poised to make a strong statement in the large-size SUV market. It boasts a striking new design, a focus on luxurious comfort, and advanced technology, perfectly balancing powerful performance with improved fuel economy. Toyota’s renowned reputation for quality, durability, and reliability further solidifies the Sequoia’s position as a top contender in its segment. Upon its dealership debut next month, the Sequoia will also introduce the Capstone grade, an exclusive suite of premium features specifically for vehicles manufactured at Toyota Texas, highlighting the plant’s pivotal role in this model’s launch.

Deepening Roots in San Antonio

To celebrate the Toyota Sequoia finding its new production home in San Antonio, Toyota Texas has demonstrated its commitment to the local community through significant donations. A combined $100,000 has been gifted to the San Antonio River Foundation and the San Antonio Parks Foundation. These funds are dedicated to supporting tree proliferation, preservation efforts, and various environmental stewardship initiatives within San Antonio’s south side, reinforcing Toyota’s dedication to environmental responsibility and community engagement.

Toyota’s total investment in San Antonio now exceeds $3.1 billion, underscoring its long-term commitment to the region.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg remarked, “We are thrilled that the all-new Toyota Sequoia is being manufactured right here in San Antonio at Toyota’s upgraded facility. This milestone is a testament to Toyota’s confidence in our city and our skilled workforce, and we deeply value their continued presence.”

Judge Wolff added, “Having been involved with Toyota’s initial decision to establish their plant in San Antonio back in 2002, it’s been a privilege to witness their growth into a leading corporate citizen over the past two decades. Together with their supply partners, they have created over 7,000 jobs for Bexar County residents. We are excited to celebrate this local production of the all-new, all-hybrid Toyota Sequoia, further cementing Toyota’s positive impact on our community.”
