When shopping for a performance SUV, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk and the Dodge Durango SRT are often top contenders. Both offer impressive power and capability, but for me, the choice was clear: I went with the Dodge Durango SRT. Having cross-shopped both models extensively, here’s why the Durango SRT won me over, even considering the allure of the high-powered Trackhawk Dodge.
One of the primary factors in my decision was the overall aesthetic and interior design. I spent a considerable amount of time driving a rental Jeep Grand Cherokee, and despite its capabilities, I never truly connected with its appearance or cabin. For a vehicle with such a large exterior footprint, the Jeep’s cargo space felt surprisingly limited. Visually, the Trackhawk, while powerful, lacked the aggressive styling I expected for a 707 horsepower beast. In my opinion, even the Dodge Challenger and Charger boast a more compelling front profile.
Initially, test driving the Durango SRT left me slightly wanting more power, and the idea of a Trackhawk version of the Durango certainly crossed my mind. However, after owning the Durango SRT for a couple of weeks, I realized that its power is more than sufficient for everyday driving. The Durango SRT is undeniably a heavier vehicle than the Jeep and handles accordingly. The Trackhawk’s immense power, while thrilling, would likely only be fully appreciated in very specific scenarios, perhaps exclusively on a drag strip.
To make an informed decision, I intentionally visited a dealership that had both the Dodge Durango SRT and the Trackhawk Dodge in stock. This allowed for a direct, side-by-side comparison, solidifying my preference for the Durango SRT. It’s also worth noting that I own a Nissan GTR as my weekend and show car, which satisfies my need for extreme performance and handling. Therefore, my SUV primarily serves as a daily driver for hauling cargo and trailers, requiring ample, usable power – a role perfectly filled by the Durango SRT. For 90% of my driving needs, the Durango SRT delivers a satisfying blend of performance and practicality. Had I been in the market for a single vehicle to fulfill both daily driving and weekend thrill needs, the decision might have been more challenging.
Ultimately, I am extremely satisfied with my choice. The front-end design of the Dodge Durango SRT was a significant selling point for me, perfectly capturing the blend of aggression and refinement I was looking for.
