Choices and competition in the automotive world are generally beneficial, especially as electric vehicles (EVs) become increasingly prevalent. However, the Volkswagen ID.7 initially seemed a bit puzzling. Was it simply an electric sedan version of the ID.4, but more expensive? Positioned as a successor to the Arteon, a model that didn’t exactly set sales charts on fire, the purpose of the Vw Id7 felt unclear.
Even after esteemed EV expert Tom Moloughney lauded the vw id7 with high praise, some skepticism remained. Was this model truly significant, or just a fleeting element in Volkswagen’s evolving EV strategy, paving the way for more accessible future offerings?
However, firsthand experience can be transformative. After spending time behind the wheel, the vision for the vw id7 finally clicked. It became clear that the initial perspective had missed the mark.

The Distinctive Appeal of the VW ID.7
The vw id7 distinguishes itself as a remarkable EV for several compelling reasons. Firstly, it exudes a premium feel that elevates it beyond the typical Jetta or Tiguan. It embodies that sought-after European sophistication often desired by automotive enthusiasts in America, akin to the allure of an Audi RS4 Avant or a Volkswagen GTD, or even echoes of the distinguished Phaeton. This is welcome news for those who appreciate European automotive finesse.

Secondly, the vw id7 emerges as the technological flagship within Volkswagen’s EV lineup. It spearheads innovation, showcasing the latest advancements in software, augmented reality displays, and future plans for an AI-enhanced voice assistant. This model is at the forefront of VW’s technological deployment in the coming years. Features include “smart air vents” with electric motors for swivel control, adaptive headlights that respond to steering angles, the IDA voice assistant, and Level 2 hands-free assisted driving technology (though this feature was not tested during this initial drive).
Most crucially, the vw id7 is engineered for exceptional range, positioning it as a long-distance champion and an efficiency benchmark. Whether you consider it a range king, a road trip companion, or an efficiency marvel, the vw id7 is poised to be Volkswagen’s electric marathon runner in the US market. Designed with Autobahn-level comfort, speed, and range in mind, this vw id7 is primed to become VW’s long-distance electric leader when it arrives stateside.
Volkswagen acknowledges that the vw id7, along with the new ID. Buzz, is not intended for mass-market volume sales. However, for discerning buyers who value these attributes, the vw id7 presents a significantly more attractive option than initial impressions might suggest.
Design and Driving Dynamics of the VW ID.7
The appeal of the vw id7 begins with its exterior design, arguably the most refined application of the ID family aesthetic to date. It presents even more favorably in person than in photographs, featuring a streamlined, understated silhouette with a distinctly European flavor. It evokes a similar vibe to the classic Citroën C6, a sentiment that extends to its driving characteristics.
The test vehicle was a European-specification vw id7 model equipped with an 82 kWh battery (77 kWh usable), rear-wheel-drive, and a 286-horsepower output. This configuration achieves a maximum range of 621 km (386 miles) on the European WLTP testing cycle. While the EPA range testing cycle in the U.S. differs, projections estimate around 300 miles of range per charge for the US version of the vw id7, though official EPA figures are still pending. During the German test drive on a cool March morning, the car displayed a 443 km range at a 99% charge.

This 300-mile range estimate for the vw id7 could prove conservative, especially considering its anticipated starting price around $50,000 and the growing segment of EVs achieving over 300 miles of EPA range. The vw id7 is well-positioned to compete with models like the Hyundai Ioniq 6. The forthcoming vw id7 Pro S, with its larger 91 kWh (86 kWh usable) battery, is projected to reach 700 km (435 miles) on the WLTP cycle. While Volkswagen hasn’t confirmed US availability for the Pro S, its introduction would be a welcome addition.
Regardless of the final EPA figures, the vw id7 promises respectable range and a strong emphasis on energy efficiency. A Volkswagen representative confirmed its sustained efficiency even at speeds up to 75 mph. The vw id7 is engineered as a long-distance cruiser, designed for extended journeys with only brief fast-charging stops needed.
Interior Comfort and Technology of the VW ID.7
Stepping inside the vw id7 reinforces its long-distance cruising focus. The cabin creates a cocoon-like environment, enveloping the driver and presenting essential information through a refined narrow display bar – a more elegant solution than the ID.4’s smaller screen.

The vw id7 features a new 15-inch central infotainment touchscreen, operating Volkswagen’s upgraded software suite. This system is reported to be significantly more user-friendly, faster, more responsive, and richer in features compared to previous iterations found in earlier ID.4 models. The augmented reality displays projected onto the windshield are a notable highlight, providing clear and tasteful animations for navigation and lane-keeping assistance.
The interior of the vw id7 conveys a distinctly premium and upscale ambiance. While less overtly sporty than an Audi interior, it maintains a similar level of high-quality materials and fit and finish. The seats are generously sized and plush, offering both heating and cooling functions, along with a pressure-point massage feature. The initial perception of the vw id7 as simply an ID.4 sedan is quickly dispelled; the interior quality surpasses that of the ID.4.
Driving Experience: Smooth and Refined
On the road, the vw id7 prioritizes comfort above all else. It is not a sports sedan, nor does it aim to be. The suspension is tuned for softness and compliance, effectively absorbing road imperfections to provide a remarkably smooth ride. The brake pedal, however, is noted as being slightly too soft for some preferences. Overall, the vw id7 delivers a buttery-smooth driving experience, complemented by equally smooth acceleration. While capable of surprising rear-end responsiveness with aggressive accelerator input in corners, the overall driving character leans towards relaxed cruising. Thinking of an “electric Lexus LS” accurately captures the intended driving experience – consistently pleasant and effortless, particularly suited for long journeys.
The 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system in the vw id7 deserves special mention. It delivers an exceptionally rich and dynamic audio experience, ranking among the best in any vehicle, EV or otherwise. This premium sound system enhances the relaxing and enjoyable nature of long drives in the vw id7.

The core purpose of the vw id7 becomes clear: it excels as a long-distance road trip EV. This extends to the spacious rear seating, offering ample room, even allowing for near-standing height to manage child locks, as playfully noted in the original review.
Minor Drawbacks and Market Positioning
While the vw id7 addresses some user interface frustrations from previous ID models, such as persistent climate controls on the main screen, certain ergonomic quirks remain. The absence of a physical volume knob and the continued use of touch-sensitive temperature and audio sliders are still points of contention. Furthermore, the touted voice assistant controls in the test vw id7 fell short of class-leading systems from Mercedes and Volvo, struggling with basic commands like “navigate to Wolfsburg.”
These voice control issues may be attributed to regional and language variations, with potential improvements expected in the US version. The planned integration of ChatGPT could further enhance the voice assistant’s capabilities, although its availability for the US market is yet to be confirmed.
The pricing of the vw id7 will likely position it outside the mainstream volume segment. Its German production also means it will not qualify for US federal tax credits unless leased. Despite these factors and some lingering user experience criticisms that Volkswagen aims to address with a return to physical buttons in future models, the vw id7 leaves a positive and compelling impression. It sparks a desire to embark on a cross-country road trip upon its arrival in America.

For a specific segment of drivers, the vw id7 will fulfill the need for a comfortable, Euro-luxury, long-range electric cruiser – a vehicle they may not have realized they were seeking. Many more drivers might find themselves charmed by the vw id7 if they take the opportunity to experience it firsthand.
The vw id7 is anticipated to go on sale in the U.S. in the late third quarter of the year.
