TR3’s Tim Reynolds Unveils Solo Album “Participation Mystique”
In addition to the tour excitement, Tim Reynolds of TR3 has released a captivating solo album, Participation Mystique (in the Age of the Mushroom Bandit). This album, a treasure trove of music recorded two decades ago in Reynolds’ Santa Fe, New Mexico studio, showcases his unique ability to blend rock, jazz, and world music influences into a mesmerizing sonic experience. Participation Mystique is a testament to Reynolds’ timeless musical vision, now available for fans to explore.
The album opens with “Pathetic Propaganda Ploy,” a track charged with a late-90s punk energy reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails, driven by powerful guitar riffs and punctuated by intriguing maniacal laughter. Reynolds masterfully employs drum loops throughout the album, except for “Cordially Distant,” a song reflecting his public interactions. Notably, Reynolds performed all instruments on Participation Mystique, including Stratocaster, Telecaster, 7-string guitar, vocals, keyboards, bass, and programmed drums, demonstrating his multifaceted musical talent. The album features mostly unreleased tracks, with the exception of two TR3 favorites, “Revelation” and “Meaning to Tell You,” offering both new and familiar sounds to listeners.
Reynolds describes the essence of Participation Mystique as profoundly spiritual, “a pure expression that is close to my heart.” The album reaches its zenith with “Spirit Molecule,” an 18-minute epic that merges Reynolds’ 7-string guitar improvisations with NASA recordings of Neptune’s space sounds. He portrays the track as a “recording of Neptune…definitely trippy, engaging deeper communications. Low drones that sounded like B-17 bombers,” inviting listeners on a sonic journey through space and self-discovery.
